Sleep Deprivation Linked to Decreased in Reaction Times

In a cooperative effort between the University of Texas and the United States Military Academy at West Point, researchers studied the connection between reaction times and sleep deprivation. 28 well-rested cadets were studied in comparison to 21 sleep-deprived cadets. The study examined information-integration abilities (reaction times) of the cadets based on their level of sleep deprivation. The study found that the accuracy of information-integration tasks decreased by 2.4% when sleep-deprived, and improved by 4.3% when well-rested.

Operating vehicles and equipment often requires the user to react quickly to potentially dangerous situations. All such users should take note of this study and the potential dangers of sleep deprivation. Based on this study, sleep deprivation could be fatal if one were to choose to drive while impaired. We should all do our part to make the roadway a safer place by practicing good sleeping habits when we are going to be driving.
